A coastal trip on São Miguel
Updated: Jan 28, 2023
Black beaches, amazing coastal slopes, green fields with many many cows, a lot of barbecue places with a panorama atlantik view and many ‘miradouros’ (view points) on the coast road all around the island São Miguel. Take a rental car and enjoy a road trip for some days. The island is small enough to come back to your hotel at night. I recommend you the Furnas Boutique Hotel with its amazing Thermal Bath and the incredible hotel restaurant ‘A Terra’.
Don’t miss the following Miradouros on the way around the island:
Miradouro de Santa Iria
Vista do Rei
Miradouro da Despe-te-Que-Suas
Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego
Pico do Ferro
Pico Bartolomeu
The key factor of the agriculture of the Azores – cows. Delicious fresh milk, amazing tasty São Jorge cheese and last but not least the lawn mowers of the island. We didn’t find out, if they got behaviour courses, but they never left the open meadow by their own. Only if their boss came by on the horse or kids, the future farmers, lead them through the streets to the next meadow.
35% downhill to the lighthouse of Farol do Arnel you saw above. There are some houses on the hill available. What an awesome view waking up during the sunrise in the morning.
Nordeste, the biggest place on the north-east coast of São Miguel. It’s the municipality of the northeastern region of the island.
With almost 5000 inhabitants, Nordeste is a fairly cosy place. We took a ‘special local’ Cappuccino complete with cream and cinnamon in the bakery next to the city hall.
In the winter and as we learned even in the summer, the weather can be very surprisingly because of the huge influence of the Atlantic. So we had partly a quite foggy road trip. But sunny pictures everyone can do:) We enjoyed the special atmosphere in the foggy november week. Even if you don’t see something you can go in shorts and t-shirt. But don’t forget your windbreaker, rain jacket or a pullover, if the Atlantic says hello again.
